The jury instructions explain the law in the case and guide the jurors when they look at the evidence. The instructions come from many years of legislation and court case law, binding the parties in the case as well as the jurors.

(1) Members of the jury, now it is time for me to instruct you about the law you must follow in deciding this case. (2) I will start by explaining your duties and the general rules that apply in every criminal case. (3) Then I will explain the elements of the crimes that the defendant is accused of committing.

The judge will advise the jury that it is the sole judge of the facts and of the credibility (believability) of witnesses. Proof beyond a reasonable doubt is proof that leaves you firmly convinced the defendant is guilty. It is not required that the government prove guilt beyond all possible doubt. A reasonable doubt is a doubt based upon reason and common sense and is not based purely on speculation.

You will be notified by email or letter (if an email address is not provided) once a partial excuse is processed. Jurors may have their jury service postponed no more than two times, after which they must either submit an excuse request (and be approved) or serve their term.

MI Civ JI 50.11 provides the following: If an injury suffered by plaintiff is a combined product of both a preexisting [disease / injury / state of health] and the effects of defendant's negligent conduct, it is your duty to determine and award damages caused by defendant's conduct alone.
