If you do not have a valid Federal extension, you must file South Carolina Form SC4868 (Request for Extension of Time to File South Carolina Individual Income Tax Return) by the original deadline of your return (April 15). Remember to attach a copy of your state extension to your South Carolina return when it's filed.

To request an extension to October 15, file Form SC4868, Request for Extension of Time to File South Carolina Individual Income Tax Return. Use this method if tax is due or if no federal extension is filed. To avoid a late-payment penalty, 90% of any tax due must be paid by the original return due date.

If you file as a full-year resident, file the SC1040. Report all your income as though you were a resident for the entire year. You will be allowed a credit for taxes paid on income taxed by South Carolina and another state. Complete the SC1040TC and attach a copy of the other state's Income Tax return.

Late Filing Penalty: This penalty is 5% of your total taxes owed if the failure to file your return is not more than one month after your SC tax return is due. You will be charged an additional 5% for each additional month or fraction of the month you file your return late, not exceeding 25%.
