In order to adopt, you must be at least 18 years of age. To foster, you must be 18 years of age. At least one person in your home must be able to read, write and speak English, or be able to communicate effectively with both the child and the agency that placed the child in your home. You may be single or married.

Many of the children in foster care who are available for adoption are eligible for Title IV-E Adoption Assistance. This federal subsidy provides financial assistance to families based on the child's special needs at the time of the adoptive placement. The benefits may include a monthly payment and/or Medicaid card.

New Legislation Under the very new law, the Ohio adoption grant is $10,000, $15,000 for foster parents adopting the child they foster, and $20,000 for adopting a special needs child. The bill also creates a new $2,500 grant to pay for college expenses for adopted children.

To proceed with adoption, the consent of the other biological parent must be obtained, unless the petitioner can provide clear and convincing evidence that the other parent has failed to maintain more than ?de minimis? (minimal) contact with the child or provide support for at least a year before the adoption filing.
