Employees who voluntarily leave employment (quit), are terminated, discharged or fired, but do not make a written demand, are due all wages and commissions on the next regularly scheduled payday. If the payday is within five days of the last day of work, the employer may have up to 20 days to make final payment.

All employers must complete a Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, to verify an employee's identity and employment authorization. Federal law also protects employees from discrimination based on national origin or citizenship status.

All employer records must be open to inspection, audit, and verification at any reasonable time and as often as deemed necessary. Records must be kept for a minimum of four years. Any employer that refuses to allow an audit of their records by the UI Program may be assessed an administrative penalty of $500.

All employers must provide each employee with a written notice at the start of their employment and keep a signed copy of the notice on file. The notice must contain required information about an employee's employment status and terms of employment.

Minnesota Statute 256.998 requires that all employers submit their new hire reports within 20 days after an employee is hired, re-hired, or returns to work. Employers who submit reports magnetically or electronically are to submit the reports in two monthly transmissions not more than sixteen days apart.
