For the sheriff to do this, you first need to get a Writ of Execution from the court. This directs the sheriff to enforce your judgment (try to collect the money). Once you have a Writ, you'll then need to fill out more forms that include written instructions to the sheriff that say where to collect the money.

Unfortunately, California is one of only two states that has not enacted the Revised Uniform Enforcement of Foreign Judgments Act, the purpose of which is to simplify the process of collecting on your judgment in a state different from the one in which it was entered. All hope is not lost, though.

To register a foreign judgment, one must file a new California lawsuit. If the California court recognizes the decision from the foreign court, it will issue an essentially identical judgment. Therefore, the California court does not have to rehash the substantive issues of the foreign lawsuit.

If a creditor previously obtained an out of state judgment, and now wishes to collect it in California, then the judgment must be registered in California courts. A reason for this is that the California Sheriff's Department is only authorized to enforce California judgments.

When a judgment has been rendered by a California court, it is enforceable only against assets located in California. If the Judgment Debtor has assets in another state, the Judgment Creditor must convert the judgment to obtain jurisdiction over the assets located in the ?foreign? state.

The law defines a ?sister state judgment? as any decree, order, or judgment from a court of any state of the US, other than California, which demands a money payment.
