You must have a Georgia Certificate of Boat Registration and a validation decal to legally operate your boat or personal watercraft on public waters in Georgia. The only exceptions are: Sailboats under 12 feet in length.

Boat registration renewals are due every three years. Complete your boat registration renewal by submitting an application to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) along with your renewal application fee. All fees are based on the size of your vessel.

Depending on your situation, it may take up to four to six weeks to receive your registration. You will receive a registration card and two decals. A decal must be adhered to each side of your boat and the registration card must be kept on the boat. You must renew your registration every 3 years.

Number must be in at least three-inch-high BLOCK letters. Number's color must contrast with its background. Letters must be separated from the numbers by a space or hyphen: GA 3717 ZW or GA-3717-ZW. No other numbers may be displayed on either side of the bow.

Document 1 (required): Proof of Ownership Bills of sale or invoices should show buyer and seller and be signed by both. If proof of ownership cannot be obtained, a completed and signed Affidavit of Vessel Ownership Form may be submitted by the vessel owner.

If you do not have one, you must undergo a DNR HIN inspection after you register your boat and pay the registration fees. Only the builder of a homemade boat intended for their own personal use may request a HIN and register the vessel. Reminder, homemade vessels cannot be transferred or sold in Georgia.
