The District Courts have jurisdiction over: Traffic infractions and violations. Offenses classified as violations of state laws or county ordinances. Criminal offenses punishable by imprisonment not exceeding one year.

The motion shall be filed and served on all parties at least 14 days prior to the time set for hearing, unless otherwise provided by the District Court Rules of Civil Procedure or ordered by the court.

Circuit Courts share concurrent jurisdiction with District Courts in civil non-jury cases in which the amounts in controversy are between $10,000 and $40,000. Other cases heard by the Circuit Courts include mechanics' liens and misdemeanor violations transferred from the District Courts for jury trials.

These trial courts are divided into four judicial districts which represent the four major islands: The First, Second, Third, and Fifth Circuit Courts (the Fourth Circuit was merged with the Third Circuit in 1943). There is a Circuit, Family and District Court in each of the four Circuits.
