A Conservation, base hunting license, and valid General Deer, Elk or Antelope hunting license is required to hunt. Valid license types are identified for each hunt. Depending on the type of hunt, the FWP Regional office may require or offer the purchase of additional B license(s).

For those that own land in a special hunting district, they will need to not only draw a general hunting license, but also apply for and draw a special permit for the special hunting district in which their land is located in order to hunt on that owned land or other lands located within that special hunting district.

Only white-tailed deer, mule deer, antelope, elk, and moose may be salvaged. A person with a permit may possess all parts of an animal including meat, hide, hoofs, horns and antlers. Any person who is picking up an animal to be salvaged must comply with all highway rules and regulations while removing the animal.

A nonimmigrant alien that possess a valid hunting license from a State within the United States or falls within any of the other exceptions or exemptions that allow nonimmigrant aliens to possess firearms may rent firearms to hunt or to use at a shooting range.

Many of Montana's hunting opportunities are only available through a draw system, which requires planning ahead. In some cases, however, licenses are available for purchase over the counter or outfitters have tags available for nonresident hunters.
