Oil was discovered in Missouri shortly after the Civil War when water wells were being drilled near Kansas City. Although Missouri has limited supplies of traditional hydrocarbons, relatively large deposits of ?heavy oil? exist that are of increasing interest to producers.

Data from the DNR lists 1,045 active oil and natural gas wells in Missouri. Brad Kramer is the owner of Kansas Resources Exploration and Development. The company manages oil wells in Kansas and Missouri and is the largest producer in Missouri, accounting for more than half of 2021's oil production.

?There's a lot of oil in the area, but it's a hard fight to get it,? said Jim Long of Nevada, Mo., who has drilled several wells in the state. The drilling challenges make Missouri one of toughest places in the country to earn a living in the oil business, and why it's been a perennial footnote in the industry.

Today, crude oil is still produced in western Missouri near the state's border with Kansas and Nebraska, and also in eastern Missouri near St. Louis. Cass County, in western Missouri, just south of Kansas City, is the source of 6 out of every 10 barrels of crude oil produced in the state.

Missouri oil typically starts around 150 feet below the surface, which doesn't provide enough natural pressure to be easily recovered. And much of the oil is heavy and flows slowly. Most producers must inject steam from large boilers of water heated with natural gas into the oil to thin it and help it flow.

The COGCC determines the areas that are able to have new wells drilled in a section. A section of land consists of a division or parcel of land fixed by government survey. A section is one square mile or 640 acres.
