The process begins with the petitioner filing a ?Paternity Petition? in family court. A judge may order the alleged father to undergo DNA testing to prove paternity. Samples taken from the mother, the child, and the possible father are sent to a lab for testing. A form of positive identification is required and the test may be free of charge.

Each hospital and birthing center in Connecticut is required by law to offer unmarried parents the opportunity to establish their baby's paternity immediately after the birth of their child. To establish paternity of a child, the mother and the father must sign the form called Acknowledgment of Paternity.
