Unfortunately, once the court establishes a legal guardianship, it can be difficult to end, or ?terminate,? the guardianship. If the guardians agree with you that the guardianship can be ended, you and the guardians can prepare and sign a written statement ending the guardianship and giving the child back to you.

The person who wants to be the new guardian would file a Petition for Appointment of Successor/Co-Guardian. The guardian can voluntarily resign if they no longer want to be the guardian. The court will have to choose a replacement guardian, and may appoint the public guardian if no one else is willing to be appointed.

Under Oregon law, a delegation of parental/guardian rights is effective for a maximum of six months.
