In Iowa, a parent or any other person having physical and legal custody of a minor can file a petition for a standby guardian. The petition should be verified and should specify that the court shall act only upon the occurrence of a triggering event.

Your parental rights can only be terminated by a judge, and only when somebody asks the judge to do it. You cannot "give up" your parental rights, although if somebody asks the court to terminate your parental rights you can consent (agree) to the termination.

To end a minor guardianship before the child turns 18, you must file a motion to request the court to terminate the guardianship, and the court may hold a hearing on the motion. When a child turns age 18, the minor guardianship automatically ends with the filing of a final report. See Iowa Code section 232D. 503.

Can Conservators or Guardians Get Paid for Their Work? Yes. A guardian or conservator may charge a reasonable fee for work done for the protected person. If the protected person has assets, the court will usually order payment from the protected per- son.
