One of the most important benefits of the UAAA is the protection it affords for student-athletes. Some of the protections contained include prohibiting agents from giving false or misleading information or promises with the intent to induce a student-athlete into signing an agent contract.

A sports agent's primary responsibility is to negotiate contracts between an athlete and their team. They handle contract negotiations when a particular company considers their client for an endorsement deal. A sports agent is also in charge of recruiting new talent and managing marketing and promotion.

An athlete agent is someone who enters into a contract with a student-athlete, or directly or indirectly recruits or solicits a student-athlete to sign an agency contract.

The Sports Agent Responsibility and Trust Act of 2004 (SPARTA), which prohibits agents from inducing college athletes when doing so endangers NCAA eligibility, charges the agency with enforcing its provisions.

This is an agreement in which a student-athlete authorizes a person to negotiate or solicit on behalf of the student-athlete a professional sports-services contract or an endorsement contract.

It makes it unlawful for an agent to directly or indirectly recruit a student athlete by giving any false or misleading information, making a false promise or representation, or providing anything of value to a student athlete, or anyone associated with the athlete, before he or she has entered into an agency contract.
