Supplementary Registration is a special type of copyright registration that may be filed to correct or amplify the information in an existing registration if that information is incorrect or incomplete. The Copyright Office refers to the existing registration as the ?basic registration.?

In general, all you need to do is create a work of authorship and write it down or otherwise record it somewhere. This will automatically create copyright protections. In theory, you do not need to own the original copy in order to own the copyright.

To eliminate uncertainity, when a creator or copyright owner is aware of inaccurate information in a certificate of registration, it would be prudent to correct any such inaccuracies. The only way to correct a certificate of registration is by filing a Supplementary Registration with the required fee of $130.

Process for Copyright Renewal The rules for copyright renewal vary depending on when the work was originally copyrighted. Copyright renewals are required for works published before January 1, 1978, to upkeep copyright protection. For works created after that date, renewal is not necessary.
