For Kansas orders, current support lasts until the child is emancipated (reaches adulthood). For most children, that is their 18th birthday. If a child turns eighteen while still attending high school, the child's current support order automatically continues until the end of that school year.

If you are currently under a child support order, but believe that you shouldn't be paying child support, you need to get the child support order modified. If the reason you believe child support should stop is a change in the parenting time (custody) of the child, then that order must be changed, also.

Federal law requires every state's child support guidelines be reviewed every four years, and it takes about two years to conduct the review. The Kansas Child Support Guidelines Advisory Committee oversees this work.

Once child support is set, it continues at the same rate until it is legally changed. Normally, CSS will review a case every three years to see if a modification of the child support order under the Child Support Guidelines is appropriate. A case can be reviewed sooner if there is a substantial change in circumstances.

Specific circumstances must exist as a reason for a change in the amount of child support paid: An increase or decrease in the amount of income of one of the parents, A significant change in the amount paid for child care or medical insurance for the child, or, A change in the age bracket of the child.
