Tennessee recognizes resale certificates issued by other states to make tax-exempt purchases in Tennessee for resale outside of Tennessee to end users located outside of Tennessee. Some exemptions are based on who the purchaser is or what the purchaser does.

All sales and use tax returns and associated payments must be submitted electronically. Sales and use tax, television and telecommunications sales tax, and consumer use tax can be filed and paid on the Tennessee Taxpayer Access Point (TNTAP). A TNTAP logon should be created to file this tax.

Every four years, nonprofit certificates of exemption are reissued to all current exemption holders by the Tennessee Department of Revenue. Renewed certificates are mailed to the current address on file with the Tennessee Department of Revenue in the weeks prior to the expiration of the current exemption certificates.

Every fourth year, the Tennessee Department of Revenue reissues nonprofit and agricultural certificates of exemption to all current exemption holders. Other exemption certificates are not updated and remain in effect unless there is a change in location requiring the certificate to be reissued.

Some customers are exempt from paying sales tax under Tennessee law. Examples include government agencies, some nonprofit organizations, and merchants purchasing goods for resale. Sellers are required to collect a valid exemption or resale certificate from buyers to validate each exempt transaction.

Sales and use tax certificates can be verified using the Tennessee Taxpayer Access Point (TNTAP) under Information and Inquiries. This verification does not relieve the vendor of the responsibility of maintaining a copy of the certificate on file.
