Judicial notice is a rule in the law of evidence that allows a fact to be introduced into evidence if the truth of that fact is so notorious or well known, or Page 4 4 so authoritatively attested, that it cannot reasonably be doubted. This is done upon the request of the party seeking to rely on the fact at issue.

Judicial notice is a method used by a court when it declares a fact presented as evidence as true without a formal presentation of evidence. A court can take judicial notice of indisputable facts, usually for purposes of convenience.

Examples of matters given judicial notice are public and court records, tides, times of sunset and sunrise, government rainfall and temperature records, known historic events or the fact that ice melts in the sun.

(a) Scope. This rule governs judicial notice of an adjudicative fact only, not a legislative fact. (2) can be accurately and readily determined from sources whose accuracy cannot reasonably be questioned. (2) must take judicial notice if a party requests it and the court is supplied with the necessary information.
