Last updated January 5, 2023 . Beginning February 2021, Montana no longer requires a permit to carry a concealed weapon in public. Now, the state allows anyone who can legally possess a firearm to carry carry one in public, without a background check.

Possession of firearms by certain individuals prohibited. It shall be illegal for any convicted felon, any person adjudicated mentally incompetent, any illegal alien and any minor to have in his or her possession any firearms. Section 9.28. 030.

Montana law also allows otherwise ineligible people to purchase and possess firearms after a felony conviction if they receive a permit from their local court, which may be granted by the court upon a showing of good cause for possession of each firearm sought to be purchased and possessed.

An individual who has lost his firearms rights may ?apply to the district court for the county in which the person resides for a permit to purchase and possess one or more firearms,? and ?shall show good cause for the possession of each firearm sought to be purchased and possessed.? § 45-8-314(2)(a).
