Pursuant to 18 V.S.A. § 5002, there are no restrictions on public access to Vermont vital records. Unlike certified copies, copies from any of the online resources below cannot be used for legal purposes.

The Massachusetts State Archives currently hold marriages for all Massachusetts cities and towns for the years 1841 through 1925. 150 Mount Vernon St. Marriage records from 1926 to the present are also available through the various offices of City and Town clerks.

Visit your local probate court and file the Petition and the certified copy of your birth certificate with the court clerk (you may be asked to show a piece of state-issued ID as well). The clerk will ask you to pay the fee, which is $150.

1857: Annual reporting by town clerks Act No. 63 of 1856 created the Vermont Registry of Births, Marriages and Deaths which required town clerks to compile lists of the vital events that occurred in their respective towns during the course of a year starting in 1857.
