A copy of the rabies certificate bearing the manufacturer, serial number, date the animal was vaccinated, veterinarian's signature and license number must be received prior to a license tag being issued. The license tag will be mailed to the mailing address you provide.

A dog's license is connected to their rabies vaccination. Some dogs receive a one-year rabies vaccination; these dogs receive a one-year license. Some dogs receive a three-year rabies vaccination; these dogs may have a one- or three-year license, depending on which the owner chose to purchase.

Licenses must be purchased directly from Animal Services after March 1st, or if a citation was issued. Proof of current rabies vaccination is required to purchase a dog license. After a dog is over 1 year of age, proof of spay or neuter is required to purchase a license at the altered rate.

MCL 287.269a. Any person who violates or refuses to comply with the licensing provisions of the Dog Law of 1919 is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine not less than $10.00 but not more than $100.00, or up to three months in jail, or both.

All citizens in the state of Michigan are required to license their dogs four months or older. A current rabies vaccination certificate from a licensed Michigan veterinarian is required in order to license dogs.
