You may search Coast Guard Documented Vessels by their names, Hull Identification Numbers or Official Numbers via the CGMIX Coast Guard Port State Information Exchange. This search applies to Coast Guard Documented vessels in the State of Texas.

Vessels Exempted from Registration? All non-motorized canoes, kayaks, punts, rowboats, or rubber rafts (regardless of length), or other vessels under 14 feet in length when paddled, poled, oared, or windblown; USCG documented commercial vessels used in coastal shipping; and vessels exceeding 115 feet in length.

Requirements for vessel registration vary from state to state. In Massachusetts, you must have a Massachusetts Certificate of Number (boat registration) to operate a motorboat legally on Massachusetts waters. Exceptions to registration are: Vessels without any kind of motor (unpowered canoes, sailboats, or tenders)

If you purchased a vessel that meets the Texas boat registration requirements, you are also required to obtain a certificate of title for that boat. All motorized vessels, non-motorized vessels that are 14 feet or longer in length, and all internal combustion outboard motors must be titled.

Bill of Sale or Invoice Requirement A signed bill of sale or invoice is required for every transfer of ownership. Trailers are handled through the local county tax office and the price of the trailer must be separated from the price of the boat and motor.
