Under this Act (Title VIII of the Consumer Credit Protection Act), third-party debt collectors are prohibited from using deceptive or abusive conduct in the collection of consumer debts incurred for personal, family, or household purposes.

This is where we get our "7-in-7" concept. You can attempt to contact a consumer about 1 debt 7 times in 7 days. And it's the "1 debt" that's key here. Phone numbers do not matter; how many debts your agency has for the consumer does.

Effective January 1, the small loan act applies to loans under $10,000 and not just $5,000 and certain other restrictions on scope are loosened. In the new changes to Regulation F, the frequency at which a collections agency can contact a consumer has changed. This change, presented in Section 1006.14B21A, addresses telephone call frequency and restricts agencies to contacting a consumer seven times within seven consecutive days.

Debt collectors cannot harass or abuse you. They cannot swear, threaten to illegally harm you or your property, threaten you with illegal actions, or falsely threaten you with actions they do not intend to take. They also cannot make repeated calls over a short period to annoy or harass you.
