All Colorado residents must have a resident hunting license. Additional licenses and permits may be required. Residents ages 18 to 64 must purchase the Habitat Stamp in order to buy or apply for a hunting license.

Hunters can get tags for both bull and cow elk in Colorado. The state classifies licenses as either List A, B, or C, and hunters are allowed only one List A tag, but can also get one List B as a second tag, or simply get two List B tags.

These codes are found in our brochures and represent licenses that are available to you. A hunt code is what you enter when applying for the draw. Every hunt code is unique, but they are all structured the same way, so if you know how to read them, you can understand what every unique hunt code means.

Leftover licenses are those limited licenses which were not sold during the application/draw process. They can be sold for any limited draw unit that has remaining limited licenses (list available July) and are sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. Online purchases begin a day later than in-person sales.

Colorado allows you to turn tags back in. This process is probably one of the simpler systems in the West. You must return your tag at least 30 days prior to the start of the hunt for a refund or a reinstatement of preference points, not both. If you choose a refund, then your preference points are not reinstated.
