The FCRA describes a "disclosure" as "all information in the consumer's file at the time of the request". Further, some state laws also entitle consumers to free disclosures and/or Background Report copies in other circumstances.

The statute of limitations for bringing an action for a violation of the FCRA is two years from the date of discovery of the violation by the consumer, although the action must be brought within five years of the date of the actual violation.

When information has been used against a consumer, such as being used as a basis to deny employment or loan acceptance, the consumer must be notified. The party using the information against the consumer must tell the consumer which agency gave them the information.

In addition, all consumers are entitled to one free disclosure every 12 months upon request from each nationwide credit bureau and from nationwide specialty consumer reporting agencies. See .consumerfinance.gov/learnmore for additional information.

The FCRA also gives you the right to request and access all the information a consumer reporting agency has about you (this is called "file disclosure"). You can get one free file disclosure every 12 months from each national credit bureau by going to AnnualCreditReport.com.

You may request and obtain all the information about you in the files of a consumer reporting agency (your ?file disclosure?). You will be required to provide proper identification, which may include your Social Security number. In many cases, the disclosure will be free.
