Lemon Laws In pursuing a case under a lemon law, your goal is to force the manufacturer to take responsibility for their defective product. Potential defects affect engines, transmissions, electrical systems, tires, and other vehicle parts and systems.

In most instances to qualify under a lemon law your vehicle must only have an unreasonable repair history under the warranty, including (but not limited to) 3-4 repair attempts for the same problem, 6 repairs total on the vehicle, or 30 days out of service by reason of repair.

To qualify for compensation under the Missouri Lemon Law you must notify the manufacturer of the issue within a year of the purchase date. Defects that aren't reported during the first year of ownership are still protected under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

This lemon law applies in all 50 states, including Missouri. To have a case under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, your vehicle must: (1) have had an unreasonable number of repair attempts, or (2) have been at the dealership for repair attempts an unreasonable length of time.

Therefore consumers filing a Magnuson-Moss claim in Missouri have five years to do so. The lemon law in Missouri does not cover used vehicles. However, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act covers vehicles suffering from problems that arise during the vehicle's manufacturer-issued warranty.

The Missouri state lemon law gives consumers 18 months from the date of purchase to file a claim. If a consumer goes through informal arbitration, such as the BBB Autoline, near the end of that 18 month period, the time period may be extended up to an additional 90 days.
