You're referring to these? Law books are so huge because there are a lot of laws to print! The books don't just include statutes (ie laws passed by a legislature), but also opinions in cases that have precedential value (eg Roe v. Wade, Brown v. Board, etc.).

Law school casebooks are expensive. Budget at least $1500 for your first year and anything you have left from that is just a bonus! Thankfully, the books seem to get cheaper 2L year. Good luck and may the bargain odds be ever in your favor.
