A person or business must have a Home Improvement Contractor License if engaged in the construction, repair, remodeling, or addition to any land or building used as a residence.

Be at least 18 years old. Be a New York City resident. Be authorized to work in the United States. Have a High School Diploma or equivalency (GED/HSED)

You are allowed to conduct construction on your property between 7am and 6pm on weekdays. At all other times, including anytime on the weekends, you must apply for after-hours authorization.

General Contractor Company licensure is not required on the State level in New York. General Contractors are licensed at the county and city level.

New York and Vermont are the only two states remaining with no Statute of Repose. Under the current law in New York, contractors and design professionals are exposed to claims for personal injury and property damage resulting from construction defects for an unlimited number of years after a project is completed.

In New York, for instance, there are no state licensing requirements for handymen. But to operate as a handyman in New York City, a person or business must have a Home Improvement Contractor License.

Register Your Business Choose your legal structure. Register your business. Apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN). Register as a sales tax vendor. Research required insurance. Register with the NYC Department of Buildings.

The law in the State of New York is that you cannot enforce your contract against the owner, nor seek the reasonable value of the services rendered, if you are not licensed. You must have the license when you perform your work and when you commence a lawsuit to recover monies due for your work.
