Illinois' minimum wage is currently $14.00 as of January 1, 2024 and will increase to $15 per hour by January 1, 2025. The minimum wage ensures a minimum standard of living and protects worker health and well-being. A 10% increase in the minimum wage boosts average incomes by 1.2%.
On January 1, 2025, the minimum wage in Illinois increased to $15 per hour and $9 per hour for tipped workers. This is the minimum wage for workers 18 years and older, or workers under 18 who work more than 650 hours in a calendar year.
Illinois follows the federal minimum salary threshold established by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for exempt employees. As of July 2024, the federal minimum salary threshold for exempt employees was $844 per week ($43,888 annually).

This means that employees cannot be scheduled for more than six (6) days in a row and employers are required to provide one 24-hour rest period within seven consecutive days. This rule applies to all full-time workers in Illinois, with just a few exceptions which we will discuss later in this article.
