Illinois Domestic Violence Summons is a court order issued to an alleged abuser to appear in court and answer charges of domestic violence. It is issued by a judge after a request has been made by a law enforcement officer, prosecutor, or victim of domestic violence. The summons can be issued to the alleged abuser in person, by mail, or by a court-appointed process server. The Illinois Domestic Violence Summons can come in two forms: Civil No Contact Orders and Emergency Orders of Protection. Civil No Contact Orders are issued when a victim of domestic violence seeks to keep their abuser away from them, their residence, or any other place designated by the court. Emergency Orders of Protection are issued when a victim of domestic violence faces imminent danger and needs immediate protection. Once the Illinois Domestic Violence Summons is served to the alleged abuser, they must appear in court to answer the charges. If the court finds the accused guilty, they will be subject to criminal penalties.
