Embezzlement / Theft of Mail Matter by Postal Service Employee is the illegal taking of letters, parcels, packages, and other mail items by a postal service employee. This can include unauthorized opening of mail, stealing of money and goods from mail, and/or tampering with mail in order to benefit the employee, or to harm the intended recipient. There are two main types of embezzlement / theft of mail matter by postal service employee: 1) Internal theft by a postal employee, and 2) External theft by a non-postal employee. In the case of internal theft, the postal employee takes advantage of their access to the mail system to steal money, goods, or other mail items for their own gain. External theft involves the unauthorized opening and/or tampering of mail by someone outside the postal service. Both forms of embezzlement / theft of mail matter by postal service employee are criminal offenses, and can result in significant fines and/or imprisonment.
