17.06 EXPLANATORY: MAINTENANCE AND CURE--SUPPLEMENTAL is a type of maritime law that provides shipowners and their crew members with a form of financial compensation in the event of illness or injury while working on a vessel. This compensation is often referred to as “maintenance and cure.” Under this doctrine, a shipowner is responsible for providing necessary medical care and sustenance to a crew member while they are recovering from an illness or injury suffered while working on the vessel. This includes payment for medical expenses and reasonable living expenses. There are two types of maintenance and cure: basic maintenance and cure and supplemental maintenance and cure. Basic maintenance and cure covers the cost of necessary medical care and reasonable living expenses, while supplemental maintenance and cure covers any additional costs, such as supplemental medical care, lost wages, and other related expenses.
