Odometer fraud, also known as "busting miles," is the illegal practice of tampering with an automobile's odometer in order to make it appear that the vehicle has lower mileage than actual. 19.00 Odometer Fraud is a specific kind of odometer tampering in which the odometer is rolled back to 19,000 miles, regardless of the vehicle's current mileage. This type of fraud is often difficult to detect since it involves resetting the odometer's digital display, rather than physically altering the odometer's mechanical components. There are two primary types of 19.00 Odometer Fraud: “direct-rollback” and “clocking.” Direct-rollback involves resetting the odometer to 19,000 without altering the vehicle’s actual mileage, while clocking involves reducing the displayed mileage by physically altering the odometer's mechanical components. Both are illegal and punishable by fines and/or imprisonment.
