18 U.S.C. Sec. 1030(A)(1) Obtaining Information from Computer Injurious to the United States is a federal law that criminalizes computer-related offenses that are harmful to the United States. The law prohibits anyone from intentionally accessing, obtaining, attempting to access, or attempting to obtain a computer, computer system, or network without authorization or exceeding authorized access, and obtaining, altering, damaging, destroying, or causing the loss of any information or data that is considered injurious to the United States. This law applies to both physical and online activities and is applicable to anyone who commits the offense within the United States, or any person or business operating in the United States. Types of 18 U.S.C. Sec. 1030(A)(1) Obtaining Information from Computer Injurious to the United States include: • Unauthorized access: Accessing computers, computer systems, or networks without permission or exceeding authorized access. • Obtaining, altering, damaging, destroying, or causing the loss of information or data: Accessing or attempting to access a computer, computer system, or network in order to obtain, alter, or cause damage to information or data. • Activity within the United States: Any person or business operating in the United States who commits the offense.
