Sec. 1544, Misuse of a Passport, is a federal law that criminalizes the misuse of passports. This law includes several types of passport misuse, including possession of a passport obtained by fraud, alteration of an existing passport, use of a passport belonging to another person, and forgery of a passport. Under this law, any person who uses a passport unlawfully with the intent to defraud the United States can be fined or imprisoned up to 10 years, or both. Additionally, any person who knowingly transfers, sells, or uses a passport unlawfully can be fined or imprisoned up to 25 years, or both. This law also applies to any person who knowingly uses a passport issued to another person to enter or leave the United States, and any person who knowingly makes or uses a false document to enter or leave the United States.
