Sec. 5861(D) Receiving or Possessing an Unregistered Firearm is a federal statute that prohibits the receipt or possession of any firearm not registered to the possessor in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record. This includes any firearm that has been altered or modified in a manner that affects its operation, any firearm with an obliterated serial number, and any firearm that has been manufactured in such a way that it is not detectable by metal detectors. Types of firearms restricted under this statute include rifles, shotguns, handguns, machine guns, silencers, and destructive devices. The penalty for violation of this statute is a fine and/or up to 10 years in prison.
