Washington Dependency Petition — Extended Foster Care is a petition process used to provide legal guardianship to youth who are in the foster care system in the state of Washington. It is a process that allows youth who have been in foster care for at least a year the opportunity to remain in the system beyond the age of 18. The petition is used to establish a legal guardianship for the youth so that they can remain in the care of their foster parents, or another suitable adult, and access the needed support and services to achieve stability and success. The Washington Dependency Petition — Extended Foster Care process includes three types of petitions: 1) Extended Foster Care Petition; 2) Guardianship and Supervised Independent Living (GSL) Petition; and 3) Transition to Adulthood Petition. The Extended Foster Care petition allows a youth to remain in the foster care system for an extended period of time, typically up to age 21, and provides access to educational and employment opportunities. The GSL Petition allows for a youth to remain in the foster care system until age 21 and gain access to independent living services and supports. The Transition to Adulthood Petition provides support and services for youth up to age 21 to help them transition into adulthood.
