Eagles' offense going wild: We've all heard this old saying since grade school: Necessity is the mother of invention. So, too, in football.
One of the more humorous anecdotes from the Eagles' first three seasons was the way in which they employed some of these same principles. The following comes from a December 21, 1979, game against the Washington Redskins— the Redskins had defeated the Eagles in their next game by a margin of 34-0. Before the game was the usual pregame, lunch, and intermission break/celebration. After the game was over, the Eagles were going through the usual lineup changes. They started off with four running backs and one tight end as a precautionary measure. After the first series, a Redskins defensive lineman blocked a punt. The kick ended up going through the uprights for a touchdown to jump-start their offense. The next time through the line, the Redskins had seven men in the box, and the Eagles lined up in six-man protection (one offensive tackle, one tight end, one back, and two linebackers). There were two pass plays, running plays and screens.
