Indirect fire is aiming and firing a projectile without relying on a direct line of sight between the gun and its target, as in the case of direct fire.

A call for fire (CFF) is a concise message prepared by the observer. It contains all information needed by the FDC to determine the method of target attack. It is a request for fire, not an order.

They include large bombs, large calibre mortars and rockets, large guided missiles, and heavy artillery projectiles. Weapons that have an inaccurate delivery system are typically unguided or are indirect-fire weapons where the target is not observed by the platform firing the weapon.

By its nature, indirect fire is designed and intended to have area effects; in other words, its purpose is not to destroy small targets, like a house, a certain vehicle or another small military object, but to inflict damage over a larger area hosting a group of soldiers, fortifications and infrastructure.

Direct fire weapons are those where the gunner can see the target, engage it and carry out corrections. In indirect fire weapons, the gunners do not see the target and use an artificial aiming reference to engage and carry out corrections.

The call for fire is a concise message containing the data necessary to put artillery or mortar rounds on a target. The FO prepares the call for fire and transmits it as a request, not an order. The CFF is sent quickly, but clearly enough to be understood, recorded, and read back without error by the FDC.

The projectile, rocket, missile, and bomb are the weapons of indirect-fire systems. Indirect fire can cause casualties to troops, inhibit mobility, suppress or neutralize weapon systems, damage equipment and installations, and demoralize the enemy.
