Get Furcation Classification 2020-2025

The resorbable collagen GTR membrane could be effectively used in the treatment of human grade II furcation defects. The resorbable GTR membrane with bone material was more effective in the treatment of furcation defects than open debridement alone.

Glickman's Classification Class III: Probe passes completely through the furcation but is not clinically visible because the soft issue still fills the furcation defect. Class IV: Probe passes completely through the furcation and the entrance to the furcation is clinically visible because of gingival recession.

The tooth most frequently and least likely displaying furcation involvement was the maxillary first molar and the mandibular second molar, respectively.

Maxillary molars have three roots (mesiobuccal, distobuccal and palatal) with three furcation entrances (buccal, mesial and distal).

Grade II: Loss of interradicular bone and pocket formation but a portion of the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament remain intact. Grade III: Through-and-through lesion. Grade IV: Through-and-through lesion with gingival recession, leading to a clearly visible furcation area.

CLASS II BUCCAL AND/OR LINGUAL FURCATION INVOLVEMENT If the tooth has a favorable prognosis with treatment, a combination of odontoplasty to reduce the horizontal component of the furcation, followed by regenerative surgery or root resection, can be completed.

These types of furcations are usually treated by debridement and/or bur odontoplasty to make them more cleansable for the patient. Class II furcations are classified by horizontal bone loss that is greater than 3 mm as measured by a periodontal probe.

Surgical treatments can repair the furcation defect with bone grafts or they can create greater access to the furcation defect to facilitate oral hygiene in the area of the defect. Because teeth with furcation defects often do not have a good prognosis, surgical treatments are often considered to preserve these teeth.
