A Brief History: The first Oxford House opened in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1975. Between 1975 and 1988, 18 houses were established by and for recovering individuals. While the scope of Oxford House has expanded, our goal of providing self-help for recovery without relapse has remained consistent.

An Oxford House charter has three basic requirements for the group: it must be democratically self-run, • it must be financially self-supported, and • it must expel any resident who returns to using alcohol or drugs.

For all three other study outcomes (including abstinence), Oxford House outperformed usual care regardless of age or diagnostic status. Importantly, when looking only at Oxford House participants, individuals who stayed there for 6 or more months had much better abstinence rates (84 vs. 54%).
