The reading section of the HiSET can be challenging because answering questions may not be as direct as answering a math or social studies question. The first step in preparing for the HiSET reading section is to take a free HiSET reading practice test.

With lots of practice and preparation, the HiSET writing section is something that every student should be able to pass.

The exams are equally as challenging; however, many say they feel that the math portion of the HiSET exam is less complicated than the GED math portion. Both are available in English and Spanish; if you pass, both exams will lead to your state's high school equivalency certificate.

You must meet the following 3 requirements to receive your HiSET Certificate: You must receive a passing score of 8 or higher on each test. You must receive a 2 or higher on your essay. You must receive a combined score of 45 or higher.

They're very similar. HiSet requires the writing test and it's optional on the GED. HiSet's math has more basic math without a calculator; GED has more algebra and word problems and very few problems without a calculator.

Aside from general reading comprehension skills, you should practice your analysis skills, ability to make inferences and to draw conclusions after reading a text, synthesis and generalization skills (e.g., can you summarize what you read and identify the main idea of a passage?), and interpretation skills.

Passing Criteria. The HiSET pass score is based on a national study of high school juniors and seniors and indicates that 60 percent of graduating high school students would pass the HiSET exam. Your score reports show whether or not you passed.

HiSET tests are scored 0-20 points. A score of 8 is required to pass each subject.
