Please change the dressing around the tube at least once per week. The drainage bag should be changed every seven (7) days. You may shower or sponge bath, but keep the dressing dry. Use plastic wrap to completely cover and protect the dressing by taping it to your skin.

Nephrostomy tubes are not routinely flushed. It is not needed unless you are specifically instructed to do so.

There should be 30 to 60 milliliters of urine draining into the bag each hour. A large amount of urine that drains over a shorter period of time should be reported. For example, 2,000 milliliters (2 liters) of urine draining out over 8 hours could be a sign of problems. Keep the site covered when you shower.

A nephrostomy is a procedure to drain urine from your kidney using a catheter (tube). Urine normally drains from your kidneys into your bladder through small muscular tubes (ureters). Tests have shown that one or both of your ureters has become blocked.

If you have only one tube, you still need to urinate. Your other kidney will still produce urine that will drain into your bladder. Having a nephrostomy tube in for a long time increases the risk of getting an infection. Nephrostomy tube care focuses on preventing infection.

A percutaneous nephrostomy catheter is a small flexible, rubber tube that is placed through your skin into the kidney to drain your urine.

Passing urine If you have 1 nephrostomy tube we would expect you to pass urine in the normal way as well, as the other kidney will still be draining urine into your bladder. If you have two nephrostomy tubes we would expect the tubes to drain all the urine so passing urine would be unlikely.
