There are two parts to the TTI - an outer dark circle and an inner light circle. As long as the inner circle is still lighter than the outside circle, the MREs are supposed to be good.

How many MREs do you need? We recommend the consumption of one or two MREs per person per day, which works out to between 1,100 and 2,500 calories (a child might be at the lower end of this). One case of 12 three-course MREs will provide a full six day food supply for one person.

Although Meals, Ready-to Eat are available only to service members, civilian versions of MREs exist as well. Like those designed for the military, they are complete meals inside a vacuum-sealed pouched. Each one contains an entrée, side item, bread or cracked, dessert, beverage mix, and condiments.

The inspection date on MREs is usually three years after the packed date. Here are a couple of cases of MREs with the date packed: Sometimes you'll have a nice date packed such “03/09/01” which you know to mean March 9, 2001.

The shelf life is highly related to the storage temperature. For example, if stored at 120 ºF or 48.9 ºC (a temperature that could be encountered on desert battlefields), the MRE should be used within a month. Stored at 60 ºF (15.6 ºC), an MRE can last 7 years or more.
