Visitation from family and friends is not usually allowed. Many inmates in solitary confinement can't make phone calls and aren't allowed any reading materials. Essentially, modern solitary confinement means being trapped inside your own head, with no way to pass the time.

Obviously, for many, $100 to $200 is not a feasible amount of money to send to an incarcerated loved one or friend each month. As such, the point which should be conveyed is that anything is of use. Even $20 a month can make quite a bit of difference in a prisoner's lifestyle.

Only four states currently allow conjugal visits, otherwise known as extended family visits, and they don't exist in the federal prison system. The states are California, Connecticut, New York, and Washington. WHO'S ELIGIBLE? Conjugal visits can only happen in medium- or lesser-security prisons.

The average cost per day to house an inmate in Idaho prisons was $55.50 for fiscal year 2013. The average inmate cost per day at the community work centers is $47.12 for fiscal year 2013. CWC inmates pay 35% of their wages to help defray those costs.
