Colposcopy is performed similar to a routine pelvic examination while you lie on an exam table. The health care provider will use an instrument called a speculum to open your vagina and look at your cervix (figure 1). The provider may repeat a Pap smear and then will look at your cervix using the colposcope.

Normal result About 4 in 10 colposcopy results are normal. This means no cell changes (abnormal cells) were found in your cervix during colposcopy or biopsy. You can have a normal colposcopy result even if you had an abnormal cervical screening result. This is because cervical screening does not diagnose cell changes.

If you have abnormal cells from your screening test you have a test called a colposcopy to have a closer look at your cervix. The doctor or nurse can take samples of your cervix during this test. You need to have treatment if this comes back showing changes. Treatment depends on how abnormal the cells are.

The squamous epithelium appears as a smooth translucent epithelium with a pinkish tinge after application of normal saline solution. The original squamous epithelium appears more pink compared to the light pink colour of the metaplastic epithelium.
