Texas annually assesses the English language proficiency of students who have been identified as English learners (ELs) in four language domains—listening, speaking, reading, and writing. TELPAS evaluates the progress that each EL makes in becoming proficient in the use of academic English.

Students took only about 1 ½ -2 hours for the listening and speaking test. Pearson has created a Headset and Microphone Test/Check which is now available for districts to test connection, recording, and audio playback of their headsets prior to the TELPAS Listening and Speaking assessment.

Online calibration is required for new raters. Raters have two opportunities to calibrate on the assigned grade cluster. complete calibration before rating; however, it's optional, unless required by campus testing coordinator. Raters must know their assigned grade cluster to select the appropriate online training.

In grades K-1, TELPAS includes holistically-rated listening, speaking, reading, and writing assessments based on ongoing classroom observations and student interactions. In grades 2-12, TELPAS includes online reading, listening, and speaking tests as well as holistically-rated student writing collections.

Students in grades K-12 who have been identified as EBs are required to take TELPAS, including EBs whose parents have declined bilingual or English as a Second Language (ESL) program services.

The TELPAS comprehension score ranges from 1 to 4. The score is determined from the listening and reading proficiency ratings. To derive the score, the student's listening and reading ratings are each converted to a number from 1 (Beginning) to 4 (Advanced High).

TELPAS fulfills federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirements for assessing EB students in kindergarten through grade 12 in four language domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
