The Human Genome Project is an ambitious research effort aimed at deciphering the chemical makeup of the entire human genetic code (i.e., the genome). The primary work of the project is to develop three research tools that will allow scientists to identify genes involved in both rare and common diseases.

As the first livestock species to be fully sequenced, the chicken genome sequence is a landmark in both avian biology and agriculture.

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) has supported a chicken (Gallus gallus) genome sequencing project that produced of 6-fold whole genome shotgun sequence coverage of the chicken genome. The resulting sequence assembly was completed in March 2004 (See the press release).

The chicken is the first bird, as well as the first agricultural animal, to have its genome sequenced and analyzed. The first draft of the chicken genome, which was based on 6.6-fold coverage, was deposited into free public databases for use by researchers around the globe in March 2004.

The project showed that humans have 99.9% identical genomes, and it set the stage for developing a catalog of human genes and beginning to understand the complex choreography involved in gene expression.

The final, complete human genome sequence was described in a set of six papers in the April 1, 2022, issue of Science. Companion papers were also published in several other journals. The work was done by the Telomere to Telomere (T2T) consortium.

The HGP revealed that there are approximately 25,000 human genes. The completed human sequence can now identify the location of each gene. The result of the HGP has given the world a resource of detailed information about the structure, organization, and function of the complete set of human genes.

The roundworm C. elegans became the first animal to have its genome sequenced, in 1998.

Louis successfully assembled the genome of the Red Jungle Fowl, Gallus gallus, which is the ancestor of domestic chickens. Comprised of about 1 billion DNA base pairs, the chicken genome is the first avian genome to be sequenced.

The HGP benefited biology and medicine by creating a sequence of the human genome; sequencing model organisms; developing high-throughput sequencing technologies; and examining the ethical and social issues implicit in such technologies.

At the project's conclusion in 2003, the number of identified disease genes had risen to more than 1,400. The Human Genome Project focused on the DNA sequence of an individual. The next step was to analyze DNA sequences from different populations. This catalog of human genetic variation was called the HapMap.
