PEIA was established under the Public Employees Insurance Act of 1971, to provide hospital, surgical, group major medical, prescription drug, group life, and accidental death and dismemberment insurance coverage to eligible employees; and to establish and promulgate rules for the administration of these plans.

If your claim is for an illness or injury wrongfully or negligently caused by someone else, and you expect to be reimbursed by another party or insurance plan, you must file a claim with PEIA within six (6) months of the date of service to ensure that the covered services will be paid.

Plan A has the richest benefits with the highest premiums of all the PEIA PPB Plans. It is available to all active employees and non-Medicare retirees. Plan B offers lower premiums with higher deductibles, higher out-of-pocket maximums, increased coinsurance, and higher copayments for prescription drugs.

UMR is PEIA's third-party administrator that handles medical claim processing, case management, utilization management, precertification, prior approval and customer service for the PEIA PPB Plans.

The new monthly surcharge of about $147 is applied when spouses of active policyholders from state agencies, colleges, universities and county boards of education are offered insurance coverage through their own employer but choose to get coverage through a plan offered by PEIA.

On Feb. 28, PEIA announced that it was going to stop coverage of anti-obesity medications effective March 15. This includes both pill and injectable forms of medicines.
