Who needs a dealer licence? Any person, partnership, sole proprietor or company selling or leasing motor vehicles to retail consumers in British Columbia must be licensed as a motor dealer. Anyone selling more than five vehicles per year is automatically deemed to be a dealer under BC law.

In Virginia, private vehicle owners can sell or display to sell up to five total vehicles over a 12 consecutive month time period. Any vehicles above five within that time period requires the seller to become a licensed an authorized dealer in Virginia.

You are permitted to sell 4 cars in any twelve-month period in Victoria - and in some cases even less. If you wish to exceed this number, you require a proper license to do so.

Having said that, there is no strict law regarding the number of cars you can sell as a private seller before being considered as operating as a dealership. The general rule has been if you sell 5 or more cars per year as a private seller, the DMV wants you to have a dealer license.
