Usually, 50/50 raffles are highly cost effective and great for smaller nonprofits that have just started out. However, success completely depends on ticket sales. You cannot and should not just rely on your volunteers and regular donors to buy tickets. That way you won't raise much money.

The premise is simple: There are a plurality of prizes and you enter a raffle by placing your ticket into that drawing (typically a gold-fish bowl) of your choice. At the end of the evening, each drawing is performed independently. The winning ticket from each drawing gets that prize.

A 50/50 raffle's prize is built into the ticket price. The total amount earned by raffle ticket sales is split evenly between the winner and the charity. Since raffle ticket sales are shared equally by the cause and lucky winner, this raffle isn't as big an earner as a traditional raffle.

At a set time, the winners are drawn at random from a container holding a copy of each number. The drawn tickets are checked against a collection of prizes with numbers attached to them, and the holder of the ticket wins the prize.

I have found it works best to have at least two raffle prizes (a grand prize and a first prize) or, better yet, three prizes (grand prize, first prize, second prize). Try to find items for the raffle that are large enough that you can sell raffle tickets for at least $5 / ea.

Have people choose a calendar day to sponsor. They will donate the amount of money equal to the corresponding number (i.e. July 20 equals donating $20). Keep going until every day is sponsored (a person could technically sponsor more than one day if need be).
